A feature list written before watching anyone work produces a tool nobody uses. We start by looking at how the thing is done today, where it jams, and what gets lost between two steps.
Sometimes the conclusion is that an application is not needed, and a better-organised spreadsheet will do. We say so, because a tool nobody opens costs more than no tool.
A web application opens on any device, updates without going through an app store, and asks nobody to install anything. It is almost always the right starting point.
When the use case demands it (offline work, camera, notifications), the application installs onto the phone straight from the browser, with no second codebase.
The data is modelled before the interface is written. That is the invisible part, and it decides whether adding a field will take ten minutes or three days two years from now.
Access rights are set from the start: who sees what, who edits what. Adding security afterwards never works completely.
